Partial building collapse in Mott Haven raises safety concerns for all NYCHA buildings

A partial building collapse in Mott Haven on Wednesday is raising safety concerns for all New York City Housing Authority buildings.

New York State adopted a "HUD Agreement" in 2019, which is a commitment to improve conditions in NYCHA complexes.

A Monitorship Report published in September of 2025 shows the city is required to replace 297 boilers by the end of 2026.

Data shows the city is two months behind schedule. The repairs will be fully completed by February 2027.

The report goes on to explain how NYCHA needs $4 billion in additional funding to complete the full repairs in a timely manner.

News 12 reached out to the city's Department of Buildings and NYCHA. DOB differed News 12 to NYCHA.

NYCHA responded with the same statement they released on Wednesday. (Link to previous story with statement)

According to city data, the main boiler at 205 Alexander Avenue was last inspected in June of 2025. The initial report shows defects found.

No final report was found.
