Morning Commute: What You Need to Know Out the Door

Stepping outside this Friday morning, you will immediately feel the humidity hanging over the Bronx. Temperatures are starting in the low 70s under a mix of sun and clouds. While the morning rush hour will remain dry, you will want to pack the rain gear before heading out because scattered afternoon thunderstorms are expected to develop after 2 p.m., which could impact your evening commute home along the Major Deegan or Cross Bronx Expressway.

Heat Advisory and Severe Storm Risk Today

A Heat Advisory remains in effect through Friday evening for all of New York City, including the Bronx. High temperatures will approach 90 degrees, but extreme humidity will push heat index values into the upper 90s to near 100 degrees. Seniors, those without air conditioning, and individuals with chronic health conditions are urged to take precautions against heat related illness today and stay weather aware during the late afternoon.

Severe Weather Outlook: Level 2 Risk

In addition to the sweltering heat, thunderstorm activity will pick up significantly heading into the afternoon and evening. Pop-up storms may begin as early as 2 p.m., with the highest storm coverage arriving after 4 p.m. The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of New York City under a Slight Risk (Level 2 out of 5) for severe weather today. Any storms that develop could produce torrential downpours, damaging gusty winds, frequent lightning, and localized flooding.

Weekend Forecast: Hot Weekend, Better Day Sunday

The classic midsummer heat and humidity carry right into the weekend, but relief is on the horizon.

Saturday will bring very hot and humid conditions once again, with high temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s. Peak feel like heat index values will hover near 100 degrees. The threat for scattered afternoon storms remains after 3 p.m.

Sunday is the pick of the weekend as humidity levels drop slightly. This reduction in atmospheric moisture will lower the overall risk for rain and storms, making Sunday the ideal day for outdoor plans at Orchard Beach, Pelham Bay Park, Van Cortlandt Park, or enjoying a day out at Yankee Stadium for the game against the Braves on Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

Looking Ahead: Next Week

The heat holds tight to start the new workweek. Both Monday and Tuesday will start off hot with highs near 90 degrees. Following Tuesday, a cold front will help push temperatures back down toward normal summer averages for the remainder of the week.
