The Department of Transportation removed decorative finials and a welcome sign from atop the old City Island Bridge Thursday.
The DOT says the finials were about 100 years old. Last year, a temporary bridge was constructed over the Eastchester Bay as crews worked to remove parts of the old bridge. They plan to transport the removed parts of the bridge to a storage facility.
The old bridge will be completely removed over the next few weeks, according to officials.
A long-term plan for the parts replacement in the community is being developed, the DOT says.
