Paterson residents soon won’t have to leave their city to catch a new movie.

The old Fabian 8 Cinema inside the Center City Mall is reopening later this year. It closed back in March 2024.

Different owners are set to give it a new name.

Box Office Cinemas will feature a mix of current releases and Bollywood movies.

"When the movie theater closed, it was a very sad day for our city,” says Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh. “Not just because it has nostalgic value, but also there are a lot of families who are struggling financially in Paterson and can't afford to go out of town to an AMC theater. So that's why we felt so hard to bring it back — and we won and it's a victory for affordability, a victory for accessibility and a victory for employment opportunities.”

The new theater is expected to open in the fall with showings of “Wicked: For Good.”
