The 27-building NYCHA complex in Mott Haven called the Patterson Houses is undergoing a $500,000 renovation to its outdoor spaces.
This is part of the Green Space Connections initiative, which is using funds to ensure NYCHA spaces have a direct impact on the health and well-being of residents.
The project at Patterson Houses includes two new playgrounds, an adult fitness center and a new basketball court - all with state-of-the-art equipment.
"These spaces - if they're more vibrant, it creates places where people want to be. We're looking to improve community health, both physical and mental health, create places where there could be areas of social cohesion and then show residents that they belong here," said Alex Zablocki, the executive director of the Public Housing Community Fund, the organization that helps secure the funding for this initiative.
The project is so special because the residents were able to have an active voice throughout the entire planning and design process.
The team told News 12 this project will be complete in less than a month.
