Perelandra Natural Foods in downtown Brooklyn has announced that it will be closing its doors after more than four decades of serving the community.
Dozens of shoppers were at the store Friday, and said they were shocked to see the notice on the door announcing the closure.
"I'm just very sad," said one community member.
The announcement sparked a wave of emotional responses, with many customers saying the thought the store couldn't be replaced.
Perelandra plans to close operations on Sept. 29. The store will extend its hours from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., starting next week offering special deals to encourage shoppers to stock up on their favorite products. Known for its hot meals, organic and natural foods and everyday essentials, Perelandra has been a cornerstone of the community, with many residents hoping for a last-minute miracle to keep the store open.
"It's been here forever," remarked one shopper. "I know we're all really sad. I mean, it's a unique special place where I can get things that I can't get anywhere else."
As the closing date approaches, community members are encouraged to visit the store and purchase their favorite items before the doors close for the last time. The loss of Perelandra will be felt deeply by those who have come to rely on it for their grocery needs and as a gathering place within the neighborhood.
