A petition has been started for street signs to be placed at a busy Bay Ridge intersection where a Fort Hamilton High School teacher was hit by a car last week.
School staff say the intersection at the corner of Narrows Avenue and 83rd Street in Bay Ridge lacks a stop sign. Due to its proximity to one of the school’s busiest entrances, the community has been highly concerned.
"We want the stop sign to be at the end of Narrows where it meets 83rd Street. 83rd Street runs adjacent to our school. Students dismiss out on Shore Road but walk back up this way. Staff leave and come out to 83rd and Narrows to go to their vehicles. Buses come up 83rd after picking up students. During entry and dismissal, there's just a large amount of traffic on foot in this intersection,” said Steven Holke, assistant principal of security.
United Federation of Teachers chapter leader Kristen Brehm says they've put in requests to the Department of Transportation for a stop sign and an additional crosswalk for years.
Brehm says even with the help from Council Member Justin Brannan, their requests have still been denied.
Although the DOT has conducted traffic studies in the area, those were done during the summer. Brehm says that is an inaccurate representation of the intersection during schooltime.
"When it's quiet, you don't really see much traffic here. But in the morning and at drop-off and at pickup in the afternoon, at release time, it's crazy,” she said.
Brehm has started a petition to raise awareness about the cause.
News 12 has reached out to the DOT about the rejections of the traffic improvements and is waiting to hear a response.
