A new photography exhibition at the Arsenal Gallery in Central Park is an ode to pickup basketball in New York City's parks.
For photographer Kevin Couliau, basketball is much more than just a game. He photographs all of the details he observes as a player.
"There's no other place in the world that has basketball courts like New York. The metal backboards are special you only find them here," says Couliau.
From the smallest of playground court details to the essence of pickup basketball throughout the seasons, Couliau has captured it all in "Heart of the City." He has been documenting New York City hoops from 2004 to 2020 across all five boroughs.
The Central Park exhibit is curated by common practice and supported by the NBA Players Association and Project Backboard.
The exhibit will be featured until Sept. 5. The museum is free to visitors and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at 64th Street and Fifth Avenue.
