Pig Beach BBQ, a popular eatery in Brooklyn that draws thousands each year, is expected to close its doors due to planned zoning changes from the city.
The restaurant said in a statement on
Facebook, “Despite our greatest efforts, what has been our flagship home for the last eight years, was sold to a local Brooklyn developer, Tankhouse, along with their parent, MacArthur Holdings, as part of the Gowanus rezoning project.”
Shane McBride, the owner of the eatery that is footsteps away from the Gowanus Canal, says he is disappointed to see the original flagship close.
“We lost our lease…the Gowanus neighborhood was rezoned…the former mayor pushed through a rezoning at the 11th hour and our building was sold to a new developer,” he says.
Jairo Presinal, who's worked at the Union Street restaurant for the past four years, says it's like a second home.
“It’s been the same team since we opened. Everyone is like a small little family. Having a space next to the water makes it very fun as well,” he says.
The Brooklyn location is set to close Dec. 30. The staff says they are hoping to make a comeback in the borough.
Pig Beach BBQ still has locations in Queens and in West Palm Beach, Florida.
