A local organization is helping single mothers and their daughters.
Pink Lily hosted its first-ever coat drive for families on Friday.
Founder Roshell Powdar says there's always a need for coats in the winter, but because of the pandemic, many families are now facing unemployment.
"We really felt like it was our obligation,” said Powdar.
Powdar tells News 12 being a single mother is tough on a good day and that the coronavirus pandemic has only made it harder.
“To be a single mother and unemployed, they're worried where their next meal is coming from, rent, they going to be evicted,” said Powdar.
Many of the organization’s board members are mothers themselves. They are hoping to hand out more than 300 coats, with a portion of them donated by the New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services.
The organization also handed out personal protective equipment so people can stay healthy and warm.
