A food bank in Piscataway that suffered through a devastating fire last week resumed their food distribution today.

Cleanup efforts began at the Fish Inc. multibuilding in Piscataway that was destroyed in the fire. Drone 12 was over the scene Wednesday as crews covered the roof and attempted to salvage food items.

Distribution continued Monday and was set up in the parking lot of the church on New Market Road.

Lisa Couch, the president of Fish Inc., says the organization will receive assistance from the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. She said they will start a drive-thru service similar to how it was done during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lauren Higgins, of Piscataway, says she was in the mortgage industry for 23 years. She says when the economy changed, she couldn’t secure any type of employment.

"I'm pretty much living off the food pantries," Higgins said. " I'm just very thankful because without them, I can't make ends meet."

The frozen turkeys and hams that will be used for Easter meals were saved from the fire, according to Couch. She says pickup for Easter food will be held on Saturday, March 16.

Fish Inc.'s GoFundMe has raised over $17,000 so far. The food pantry will operate in the parking lot Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon, weather permitting.

There is still no word on the cause of the fire.
