A man is facing multiple charges after authorities say two officers were hurt while responding to a shooting that also injured a man at a Prospect Lefferts Garden apartment.
The NYPD says the officers responded to the apartment on Hawthorn Streer, where a gunman fired shots at both of them. When officers arrived, police say the gunman came out wearing a blanket over his shoulders, before pulling out a .38-caliber weapon and firing.
One officer was hit in the leg, and the other was hit in the chest, police say. Police say the second officer was fortunately wearing a bulletproof vest.
After the gunman shot at officers, police say the man ran back into the apartment.
The suspect had barricaded himself in the apartment with his roommate and his roommate’s girlfriend, police say.
The woman was not injured, but News 12 is told the male roommate was shot in the legs.
The officers who were shot were not seriously injured, and were able to apprehend the gunman, who is in custody.
The suspect has been identified as 44-year-old Ridhwaan Abdur Rashid. Police say he is charged with attempted murder of a police officer, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and unlawful imprisonment.
Officials say they recovered two guns at the scene, including the one allegedly used to fire at the officers.
Both officers and the roommate are recovering at Kings County Hospital. The NYPD tells News 12 there are no previous domestic incidents reported at the address.
