Police: 8-year-old child dies after handrail falls on her in the Bronx
Police say an 8-year-old girl is dead after a handrail detached and fell on her on Monday.
They say it happened around 8 p.m. in the vicinity of Tratman and Zerega Avenue.
Police say the child was found with trauma to the head and was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where she was pronounced dead.
The DOB says their preliminary investigation at the scene determined that a 10-foot section of granite balustrade fell off the porch and struck the child.
Prior to the incident, the DOB said it had not received any reports of structural issues at this building or with the front porch.
The DOB’s investigation into this incident is ongoing. They say possible enforcement actions are pending the results of the investigation.
