Police arrest 16-year-old suspect linked to shooting near 4 Midwood schools

The Department of Education says the shooting was not school-related and did not happen on school property, but parents were concerned as the incident took place within a few blocks of four Midwood schools.

Police say they arrested a 16-year-old suspect in connection to shots fired near schools in Midwood on Monday.
The Department of Education says the shooting was not school-related and did not happen on school property, but parents were concerned as the incident took place within a few blocks of four Midwood schools.
Teachers tell News 12 that students inside the neighboring schools were put on lockdown.
Some parents and union leaders claim that those involved were students who went into Midwood High School with a gun before getting into a fight outside and firing.
“These were students that attended Midwood High School and they left in the morning,” says Mona Davids, of the NYC School Safety Coalition.
The City Council put a hiring freeze on school safety agents. News 12 was told there hasn’t been any new hires since 2019.
The incident occurred after five guns were taken out of city schools in the last week.
The NYPD says they recovered a gun at a private residence. They say the 16-year-old suspect that was taken into custody has a history of unsealed gun arrests in the last eight months.
