A Bronx man is facing murder charges after police say he admitted to shooting his girlfriend at a park in Highbridge.
Police say they responded to Macombs Dam Park shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday for a reported assault. They found Araceles Colon, 45, shot in the stomach.
Colon was transported to Lincoln Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police say Jonathan Sanchez, 33, originally told them his girlfriend had been shot after three burglars attacked them as the two were walking in the park.
However, police say he later admitted to killing her and making up the story. Sanchez was taken into custody.
Family members say the two had been dating for two years and they did not expect things to end like this.
Police say he is facing charges of murder and criminal weapons possession.
