A group of good Samaritans and police officers came together to save an elderly woman who was pinned by a van – and it was all caught on camera.

The incident happened Tuesday outside the post office on Hawthorne Street in Middlesex Borough.

“This is a really good example of how we can accomplish great things together,” says Chief Matthew Geist.

The five bystanders are being hailed as heroes for stepping into action to help save the woman. When officers arrived at the call, they saw that they had help.

“Officer observes the woman pinned under the vehicle and five Samaritans and two of our police officers lifting the vehicle off of the pinned woman to free her,” Geist says.

The group is seen on police body camera video lifting the white minivan to get the woman free. She was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital to be treated.

"If not for the quick response of our officers and the selfless actions of the folks who were on scene, this would have been a longer duration. This poor victim would have been stuck under the car,” says Geist. “Surely, two police officers couldn’t lift the vehicle off of this poor victim.”

Geist says the department has great support from the community and commends the swift actions of the good Samaritans.

"These are heroes, and they're fantastic people to offer their assistance for somebody who needed them,” he says.

Geist says the driver of the car did remain on scene. Details about the accident remain under investigation.
