A 19-year-old employee of the city's Department of Education was shot in the head in Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon, according to the NYPD.
The victim was shot at the intersection of Avenue M and Utica Avenue and is currently in Brookdale Hospital in critical condition. The incident took place near P.S. 203. The NYPD says that the victim is currently in critical condition.
Police are searching for a suspect they describe as a Black male wearing a red ski mask, a red sweatsuit, and a black jacket. They say the suspect fled from the scene in a dark-colored sedan, and that the victim was the intended target of the shooting.
Schools Chancellor David Banks issued a statement on the shooting:
“I am absolutely heartbroken and outraged that one of our dedicated employees was senselessly a victim of random gun violence. Our educators, our students, and our families deserve better than living with the threat of gun violence. I am in contact with the school’s principal and will ensure that the students have the counseling services they need as they grapple with this tragedy and will be working with the NYPD to increase security around the school.”
