The NYPD has filed charges against a school bus driver who allegedly struck and killed a teenager walking in a crosswalk in Brooklyn on Monday morning.

Police say the incident happened at the intersection of Bedford Avenue and Avenue P a little before 8 a.m.

The teen was identified as Antonina Zatulovska, of Coney Island.

Police say that 55-year-old Aleksandr Patlakh was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to use due care. Zatulovska was apparently trying to cross the street when Patlakh allegedly hit her and drove off.

The Department of Transportation says that 60% of pedestrian deaths last year were the result of major violators, which include those who leave the scene of a crash, drivers without a valid license, drivers with several convictions and drivers with prior DWIs.

“Our leaders must take immediate action and use every possible tool to save lives,” says Danny Harris, executive director of Transportation Alternatives. “We must redesign deadly corridors… and reduce the number of vehicles on New York City’s streets.”

Patlakh was released and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
