Police ID pedestrian fatally struck in Brooklyn
Police say a man was fatally struck early Thursday in Brooklyn.
According to police, officers responded to a 911 call for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at 12:29 a.m. Thursday at Bushwick Avenue, just south of Meserole Street.
Police located a 33-year-old man with trauma to the head and body at the scene. The victim was transported to NYC Health & Hospitals/Woodhull where he was pronounced dead. Police identified the man as Luis Jr, Celestino Mendez, of California.
An investigation by police determined that the victim was attempting to cross Bushwick Avenue mid-block when he was struck by a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro traveling northbound on Bushwick Avenue.
Tyler Patrick, of Brooklyn, the 18-year-old male driver, remained on scene and was not injured. Police say he was taken into custody and charged with assault, and operating a car while impaired by drugs, among other charges.
