Police are investigating a fatal accident on the south bound Major Deegan this morning.
Officials say the crash happened around 3:15 a.m.
Police tell News 12 a Mercedes sedan in the left lane appeared to be trying to get to the exit. That’s when police say the Mercedes collided with another car and careened into a pole, just before Exit 7 for the George Washington Bridge.
Police say the driver of the Mercedes died at the scene. They say the body was so badly burned they are still trying to determine if the driver was male or female.
No criminality is suspected at this time.
News 12 is told the crash caused a major backup for a few hours this morning.
