A quiet North Shore community was shaken early Monday morning after a man was found fatally injured near the Stony Brook Yacht Club.

Suffolk County police say they are investigating the case as a homicide.

Authorities identified the victim as 52-year-old Christopher Millwater of Selden. According to police, officers responded to a call on Shore Road around 3:40 a.m., where they found Millwater suffering from injuries.

He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators have not released details about how Millwater was killed, saying only that he was “the victim of violence.”

Homicide detectives were seen working at the scene for much of the day, focusing their attention on a Porsche parked near the area.

Neighbors say the crime has left them stunned.

“That doesn’t happen around here,” said Christian Kollar, of Stony Brook. “There’s hardly any crime or violence. That’s why I moved here. So it’s very surprising and shocking.”
