News 12 sat down with Marlon Larin, the NYPD school safety commanding officer, for a breakdown on the preventative measures taken in regard to weapons on school grounds during the 2022-2023 school year.

All right. Well, let's give you a check of your weather. Now with storm watch team, meteorologist, Alan. No, Alan, you would tell me a little bit about how I should plan out my weekend. What are we working with this week? Oh, yeah, it's going to be a 5050 weekend. And unfortunately that a negative side of the 5050 might be a biggie. But before we get to that, let's continue to talk about this cold because it's that December cold that out the door this morning this morning, you felt it tomorrow morning especially. You will want that winter jack. It'll actually be near freezing for northern parts of our borough. 32 for Riverdale. A bit milder. The farther south you go. So th 35 City Island, 37. But hat and scarf. I would recommend that for tomorrow morning and into the afternoon, the clouds will keep us chilly all day long. Honestly, me, we might touch that 40 degree mark briefly there at around two or three o'clock. But most of the day will be in the thirties. Should generally be dry. Can't roll out an isolated Sprinkle, but we have a chance for a couple of snowflakes heading into Hanukkah, especially during the afternoon and evening as the sun sets, a couple of flakes are possible. Again, it's not gonna stick, it's just going to add to the festive feel here into the evening hours, it'll still stay chilly. And then the weekend ahead, this is where it's going to be a potential problem. We have an area of low pressure, warm air ahead of it. So Saturday is actually going to be pretty nice. But on Sunday, there's going to be plenty of moisture and rain and the possibility of a couple of thunderstorm are out there. That's why I got that yellow highlight on the 10 day forecast. Those high temperatures well into the sixties, in fact, but it's not a day where you want to spend time outdoors as it stands now. Ok. Is it going to be an all day storm? We're expecting, we're still working out the details on that. Today's Tuesday. This is for Sunday, but the potential is there for the second half of the day, especially for significant rain. Ok. Police: New record set for weapons found in schools

We're on pace to break last year's record. I can say that the firearms are down. We have recovered 15 firearms last year. This time it was 20. But the most popular items that we're seeing are our knives, the or B gel blasters, which is a new phenomenon that the young people they're just bringing to the school. Sometimes steps are taken to make them more menacing such as freezing the actual pellets and discharging them. But we haven't seen that on a school site. Uh The which is a martial arts kind of instrument that is popular with young ladies and also the mace or pepper spray. Those are by far the top items that we've been recovering this year. And when we say recover, we mean through scanning, we mean found on school property in the immediate perimeter or if somebody just surrenders the property themselves, we have 80 full time scan sites citywide have 1400 school buildings though. So the percentage is very low. We do rely on our unannounced scanning component, which is a team of agents that deploy to different schools based on what we're hearing and what we're seeing. It can be based upon request by a principal or on some intelligence that we may have that there's a threat to that school or another student for any given day. And that's really where the majority of the weapons and instruments are coming out of that unannounced scanning component. As far as the full time scanning sites goes, we have conducted a study and a cost analysis to see what it would mean to have them out fully in our high schools. But that hasn't been a final determination has not been made on that yet, but that is being explored. So, conversations are being had since this continues to be a persistent problem. Any other measures that are being considered at this point? So we're working very hard on education. We really believe that parents and guardians have to know what's permissible and what's not. And what we're hearing from the parents in meetings is that they're concerned about their child's well being and that is true and nobody is more concerned than, than us. What we don't want to see is young people now using these devices on another because now they can end up on the wrong side of that scenario.
