Police are looking for the driver who fatally struck a 17-year-old girl in Port Jefferson Station and then left the scene Saturday night.
It happened on Nesconset Highway by Terryville Road shortly before 9:30 p.m.
Police say 17-year-old Jenna Perez, of Selden, was crossing the highway about 300 feet west of Terryville Road when she was hit by a vehicle that was heading west. Police say the driver left the scene.
Perez was pronounced dead at the scene.
A memorial at the site of the crash has been growing.
Neighbors say it's a busy area with a lot of traffic. One described it as a "dangerous area" and a very busy intersection.
Investigators are scouring surveillance video to find out who struck Perez and then drove off. They say they are not sure of the make or model of the vehicle.
Perez was a student at Newfield High School within Middle Country School District entering her senior year. In a statement, the district said that it sends it deepest condolences to her family and friends. It said counseling will be made available Monday at the high school for her classmates, teachers and staff members.
Friends remember Perez as a friendly and outgoing person.
News 12 is told that the community is planning a vigil in memory of Perez next weekend at the high school.
