Police say the man who opened fire on two NYPD sergeants in the Bronx Friday, killing one of them, had entered an apartment in violation of a protection order before the shootout.

As News 12 has reported, police stopped Manuel Rosales' red Jeep in connection with a home invasion investigation. That's when police say Rosales opened fire, fatally shooting Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo and injuring Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo. Rosales was shot and killed in the gunfight.

Police say the deadly ordeal began when they received a call about a break-in from the home of Rosales' estranged wife, who lives in a building on Noble Avenue. She was in her apartment with her 3-year-old son, a 13-year-old and a 50-year-old woman.

Less than 10 minutes later, the deadly exchange of gunfire happened about five blocks away.

News 12 cameras were there as police escorted the women and children from their Noble Avenue home to a squad car.

Police taped off the building as they investigated, and neighbors who live inside were only allowed back in later this evening with proof of residency.
