Police shot a man with a kitchen knife who they say was terrorizing grocery store employees overnight in Harlem.

The incident began around 1:15 a.m. Monday at a grocery store on 3rd Avenue. Police say a 53-year-old man got into an argument with another person and eventually became irate and disorderly. Store employees removed the man from the store, but he later returned with a large kitchen knife.

Police say the man began banging on the grocery store window with the kitchen knife and employees locked the doors and called 911. Officers from the 25th Precinct arrived and were confronted by the man. Police say the officers gave multiple commands for the man to drop the knife. However, the man approached the officers with the knife and one officer fired a shot, hitting him in the abdomen.

The officers called EMS, who took the man to NYC Health+Hospitals/Harlem and is currently in surgery. Meanwhile, the officers were also taken to a hospital for evaluation. The 13-inch kitchen knife was recovered at the scene.
