A 14-year-old was killed and another teen was left in critical condition in what has been deemed a “subway surfing” incident in Brooklyn.
Officials say that then two teen boys were headed to the Bushwick Avenue-Aberdeen Street station. Both are said to have fallen off when they started subway surfing at the Broadway Junction station.
Police believe both teens made contact with a tunnel that the L train goes into from above ground.
A local business caught part of the incident on camera.
Mayor Eric Adams said the teens were friends, and that one of the victims had just graduated from middle school.
Adams also reminded people that the subway surfing trend is incredibly dangerous and has increased by 366% between 2021 and 2022.
The NYPD and MTA sent a message that people should always be inside the train and never on top of it.
“We urge anyone even thinking of subway surfing — don't do it. It is extremely dangerous and deadly, the attention and clout you see is just not worth it,” says NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper.
Adams has also called on TikTok to take down all subway surfing videos.
