The teen accused of leaving the scene of a fatal crash in Central Islip was released without bond Friday.

Police say 17-year-old Jason Carias was driving a BMW east on Locust Street Thursday and hit a car that was moving south on Islip Avenue. The crash pushed the car into oncoming traffic, where it was hit on the driver's side by a pickup truck, police say.

Police say the crash was the result of Carias running a stop sign.

After the crash, police say Carias ran from the scene on foot but was later arrested at his home a couple of miles away.

Police say 52-year-old Maria Perez, of Brentwood, was driving the other car and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver of the pickup was also taken to the hospital but is expected to be OK.

Carias' attorney, William Collado, says his client has no criminal record and works part time at a tire shop. He is also a student at Central Islip High School.

Carias is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash and was released without bond under a supervised release. He will have to wear a GPS monitoring device. The court also ordered him to stay home unless he is going to school or work.

"The family is very upset, and their thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased," says Collado.

Carias is due back in court April 19.
