Police say an argument over a man's dog barking is what led the attacker to chop off four of the victim's fingers with a machete.

Police say around 12 p.m. Friday, the suspect was complaining about dogs barking outside a bodega at 2001 Southern Blvd. - that's when officers say the man pulled out a machete and tried to attack the dogs.

Police say the dog's owner stepped in front of his dog, and that's when the attacker sliced four fingers off the victim and then fled on foot.

The victim was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, who is said to be listed in stable condition.

Witnesses on the scene say first responders were able to recover three of the four fingers.
