Police say a 39-year-old woman was found fatally shot in a high-end Mineola apartment building Saturday morning.
Officers say they were responding to a wellness check at the Allure Mineola on Old Country Road where they found the victim with apparent gunshot wounds.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Building residents said it was shocking to learn that a woman was found dead in the building.
"She was a lovely, lovely woman. She was a sweet soul and God rest her soul. She would be with us every single day," said neighbor Paul Liggieri.
Residents said the victim was an employee of the building and well known.
Nassau police had not confirmed that as of Sunday night.
The management company of the building told News 12 Long Island it is withholding more information until the entire victim's family is notified. However, they added in a statement, "We will continue to cooperate with law enforcement as the investigation continues."
Meantime, residents of the Allure, which is directly across the street from Nassau County Criminal Courts building, hope the suspect will be brought there soon.
"I can tell you, whoever did this that they come to justice and may they be brought to that courthouse across the street because at the end of the day, we just want to feel safe," Liggieri said.
Police are asking anyone with information to call the Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
