Welcome back to this episode of Power in Politics. Mayor Mamdani wasted no time getting to work, signing several executive orders just hours after being inaugurated. News Twelve's Rob Flax breaks down what was enacted and what was reversed on day one. Not even 24 hours in office, and Mayor Mamdani has already signed 5 new executive orders. His first repealing all executive orders issued by Mayor Adams after the day he was federally indicted. That was a date that marked a moment when many New Yorkers decided that politics held nothing for them. But more of the same. His second establishes his 5 picks for deputy mayors. His next 3 all focusing on a campaign highlight housing. We will also stand up for tenants, build new housing, and get New Yorkers into housing faster. Mamdani creating 2 new task forces for faster home building, including on city-owned land by July 1st, and appointing Sia Weaver to lead the restored Office. Protect tenants. We will make sure that 311 violations are resolved, and we will hold slumlords to account for hazardous and dangerous threats to your well-being. Now that announcement being made here inside a pinnacle property lobby, a group of buildings so notorious the mayor says the city is now getting involved in its bankruptcy sale to protect the tenants here in those buildings alone. There are more than 5000 open hazardous violations and 14,000 complaints. This is an untenable situation. The mayor touring those conditions previously covered by News 12, but did not say if they have the power to block the sale. Tenants there are hopeful. I want to hear that they're going to fight as hard as they can to get a slumlord to not buy this. In Crown Heights, Rob Flax, he's 12. So, Mayor Mamdani wasted no time in getting to work. Hours after being inaugurated, he starts signing some executive orders. One of them revoking all of the executive orders that Mayor Eric Adams put into place after he was indicted. What are your thoughts on that move right out of the gate? Uh, very symbolic. Um, it probably, I mean, obviously there's a lot of substance to it, substance to it, uh, things like, you know, the, the executive order about working with ICE, uh, some of the things about, um, housing, etc. especially his executive order. I mean, what did he do? He got inaugurated. He went to Brooklyn. He went to, uh, you know, a housing unit where the landlords were not fixing. You know, all of the complaints, so there was a lot of symbolism in that in the sense that he's saying we're turning the page on the corruption of New York City government, but there was real substance in the in where he did this. He's going to, to, to, to really focus in on the affordability crisis and show that he is on the side of tenants in this, you know, landlord tenant. A conflict that is perennial in New York City. So it was both symbolic, but it was also substantive, showing that on day one, this is his agenda and this is a significant part of his agenda. Definitely a powerful image to see him rallying alongside tenants just hours after he was on this grand stage being inaugurated into office. Is this a signal of what he is going to be focusing on and prioritizing right out of the gate? Should we expect action on housing? Well, yes, and I think what's interesting about that is that these are the things he can do within his power as mayor, you know, much like a president can executive, can, you know, issue executive orders at the federal level, and you saw Donald Trump, I mean, he's up to about 250, which is more than any other president. A mayor can do that because those are the things that a mayor can control. The things he can't control right now is the funding for universal childcare and free buses. He needs the state legislature, legislature, and he needs Governor Hochel, and the state, you know, legislature is just going into session. It starts in January as well. So he's going to focus on his agenda and the things that he can control from day one. And, um, you know, uh, I think he's, you're going to see that he's going to have to ask the public to, to beg patience on a lot of that because he doesn't have ultimate control over whether he gets those things done. But still though, he's mentioned universal child care by name, the free buses. In his inaugural speech, so reaffirming his commitment to really getting it done. We saw the governor there amongst that front row of who's who's of Democrats. Uh, how do you predict that relationship will play out now that he is in office and he's really standing by the promises that he made on the campaign trail between him and the state legislature? Yeah, and this is where politics becomes a game of four-dimensional chess, three dimensional, whatever, however you want to put it, because Think about this for a second. Um, Hochel's up for re-election in 2026. We know that Elise Stefani just dropped out of the race, which could have been a formidable opponent. Um, you know, uh, she was an attractive candidate in the sense that she's young, dynamic, uh, could have put up a good fight. Now, uh, Hochel's going to face Bruce Blakeman, uh, you know, the Nassau County Executive who just won re-election. I'm not so sure that he's going to put up a strong, uh, you know, candidacy against her, which means that she might have more freedom and more leeway to give Mamdani more of what he needs in terms of raising taxes, which she has said that she's not really in the mood to do in an election year. Um, he's going to need that. There's less federal funding coming into the city, so she, he's going to need Hochel, and Hochel needs some breathing room to get reelected. But if she doesn't have a competitive race for re-election, then she might have more breathing room to give him what he needs. So this is where, you know, the 1st 6 months of the, of the new year becomes interesting in terms of the state legislature and the The 1st 6 months of Hochel's re-election campaign becomes something to watch, which I know you will be doing in your 1st 6 months. Already looking closely and, and even in the early hours we've seen so much movement in that race, and it just goes to show that politics, it's all about the dynamics that are ever changing. Thanks for staying with us on this episode of Power and Politics. And now that a new administration is in place to lead New York City, what will former Mayor Eric Adams' legacy be? News Twelve's Heather Fordham is taking a look back on his time in office and how he'll be remembered. With the drop of the 2022 ball, Mayor Eric Adams began his promise to bring swagger back to a city crushed by a global pandemic. Our government has been dysfunctional for far too long, and it created its own crisis long before COVID. The former police captain branded himself as the get stuff done mayor. Crime was his first target. Four years later, he has the data to back up that accomplishment. 2025 is shaping up to be the year with the lowest. Number of shootings in New York City's recorded history. His tenure included navigating a migrant crisis. He made progress on the housing shortage, passing the City of Yes legislation. The economy has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, and trash is now mostly in containers. On education and public safety, Eric Adams didn't fare so poorly, but the, you know, the turmoil inside. Really detracted from the record, but by 2023, pillars of his administration began to crumble under the weight of a corruption probe. The homes of his inner circle were raided by FBI agents, and by 2024, his political career turned into a legal firestorm. Adams became the first sitting mayor in city history to be indicted on federal charges. The headline might be corruption and scandal. Eric Adams will be remembered as a very complicated. Figure in early 2025, the Trump administration ordered the DOJ to drop the charges, but the damage was done. Adams' approval rating dipped to a record low of 20%, denied matching funds. His chance at a second term quickly faded. There was enormous potential, but he didn't live up to the expectations or the potential in the Bronx, Heather Fordham, News 12.
