Preservationists want to restore a historic but decaying library at Bronx Community College.

The Gould Memorial Library is among the Preservation League of New York State's "Seven to Save," a list of sites activists say played a role in history and need serious maintenance.

The building's grand exterior stands in contrast to the damage inside.

Officials say water damage spread from the building's eighth floor, and that's only part of the problem. Sections of the building are closed off to the public.

The library, originally built to be part of New York University, is more than 100 years old and is already labeled a city, state and national historic landmark. Bronx Community College bought it in 1973.

In all, officials say it will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to restore.
