The U.S. Senate is expected to vote this week on a bill that would protect abortion rights. This comes days after a leak draft opinion from the Supreme Court suggests the Roe v. Wade case could be overturned.

A vote on the Women's Health Protection Act is scheduled for this Wednesday.

Since that leak, activists on both sides have been vocal across the country. In New York City, pro-choice activists have protested across the city at churches and even the Ruth Bader Ginsburg building in downtown Brooklyn on Sunday.

Today, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is filing cloture to move the bill along that would make a woman’s right to an abortion federal law. This could head off a Supreme Court decision that could give states the right on whether to restrict abortion.

Now as Roe v. Wade has guaranteed women the constitutional right to abortion for nearly 50 years, some New Yorkers have been speaking out expressing their concern that those rights could be in jeopardy.

The Women's Health Protection Act does not have the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster in the 50-50 Senate, but it marks Democrats' first legislative attempt to make the right to abortion into law since the leak.
