Despite the lack of a formal announcement, renovation for the long-awaited pavilion at Orchard Beach is expected to begin in the fall of 2021, and the procurement process has already begun.
The Orchard Beach pavilion project has been a long time in the making and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz agrees that he has been heard time and time again promising to get it started.
He hopes that construction will hopefully start this fall, but Bronx residents can expect an official announcement from Borough President Diaz and the mayor over the summer.
The structure cannot be demolished because it is a landmark, so they will have to work around it.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz said, "I'm ecstatic... I was able to make sure that it's gonna be preserved. It's going to be bigger and stronger than ever for future generations."
The plan is to make it a year-round destination with a restaurant and interchangeable stores.
Some amenities include ramps to accommodate all individuals, and there are plans to build a beer garden with a stage on the south garden. This will offer people an option for an outdoor venue to have weddings or birthday parties.
The North Garden will also offer lifeguards a place to relax and take a break from the workday.
The total cost of the project is about $150 million, but $90 million has already been secured at different levels of government for the reconstruction project.
