A group of Long Islanders walked into a Commack Target without masks to protest Gov. Kathy Hochul’s new mask or vaccine mandate.

The governor’s new requirement went into effect Monday and some residents say it’s a huge infringement of their rights.

One woman who took part in the protest say they want choices and that stores are going to lose their business if they are requiring masks.

Meanwhile, Hochul has left enforcement up to local leadership.

“We hope the counties will enforce it,” Hochul says. “We expect that they will, we hope that they will, it’s in the best interest of public health.”

However, not all residents on Long Island appear ready to ensure people are wearing masks indoors.

In a statement to News 12, a spokesperson for Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says “The Nassau County Health Department will respond to complaints regarding the mask or vaccine mandate. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran’s administration will not actively enforce a mask or vaccine mandate.”

When asked whether Suffolk County would be enforcing the mask or vaccine mandate, a spokesperson for Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone says “Yes. As we have done in the past, our enforcement will be, first and foremost, centered around educating local businesses and residents about the latest information and guidance.”

Hochul is also asking businesses like Target to follow the new requirements.

The mandate will stay in place until Jan. 15 and then be re-evaluated.
