Protesters rallied Tuesday in front of Islip Town Hall over a decision to have a private company run the Atlantique Marina.

For the second week in a row, members of the Atlantique Boat Owners Association say they came to town hall because officials haven't been listening to their concerns over who is operating a public marina.

"We're protesting because the town has been doing this for 60 years and now all of a sudden this administration can't handle this responsibility of running this marina and they've given it over to a vendor," says Diane Setter, president of the Atlantique Boat Owners Association.

The town awarded a 20-year contract to Strong's Marine. Members of the boat association say they have concerns about how the town settled on Strong's Marine to operate the facility.

"I really believe that a full investigation of the RFP process needs to be done and a suspension of the vendor contract in the meantime," says Setter

In a statement, Supervisor Angie Carpenter defended the process saying, "The Town of Islip hired an outside consultant to conduct a professional marina assessment. The estimated cost to perform repairs was more than $10M. The town has continued to maintain the marina on a regular basis with a narrow surplus."

According to the Strong's Marine website the company will invest in significant upgrades and improvements to the marina over the next several years.

Residents and boat owners say they are not sold on the idea. They are hoping for some last-minute changes and are concerned that the vendor will let out-of-towners into the Fire Island marina.
