Public review begins for borough-based jail project

The borough-based jail system project is officially in the public review period.
The director of the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice on Monday presented the application to the city’s Planning Commission.
As News 12 has reported, the project would create four new jail sites around the city.
The proposed site for the Bronx is at 745 E. 141st St. in Mott Haven, currently the site of the NYPD Bronx tow pound.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. has voiced opposition to the proposed site. He has questioned why the Bronx Family Court building or additional vacant space next to the Bronx Hall of Justice couldn't instead be the site for the jail.
Monday's presentation marked the early stages of a monthslong process. The project will first go to the city's community boards, then to the borough presidents. They can hold hearings and make recommendations on the proposal before it goes back to the city Planning Commission to be approved, modified or rejected.
