The price of gasoline continues to soar on Long Island.
The average for a gallon of gas is $3.40, as of Monday. That is up 8 cents since last week and compared to last year’s $2.18 average, according to AAA.
AAA Regional Director Robert Sinclair Jr. says this is the highest gas has been sinice October 2014 and that there are no signs it will be going down anytime soon.
He says the reason is the high price of crude oil, which is being caused by multiple factors.
“Last week, the international energy agency predicted a strong demand this winter for crude oil because of cold weather,” Sinclair Jr. says. “That sent billions of dollars of investment money into crude oil future—sending the price of crude over $80 a barrel.”
Drivers are making adjustments due to the high prices.
“It’s definitely affecting my choice of what I drive,” says Michael Anderer, who travels 150 miles roundtrip every day from Mattituck to Mineola. “I had another car. It was an SUV and I just turned it in."
The cheapest gas in Suffolk County is at Flying Arrows Gas in Mastic, where the price per gallon is $2.90.
In Nassau, the cheapest gas is at Express in Baldwin at $3.05 a gallon.
