A rally was held Friday in front of the African Burial Ground National Monument to call on the New York State senate to pass the Reparations Community Commission Bill.
Assembly member Charles Barron and councilmember Inez Barron have partnered with the December 12th Movement to bring attention to the proposed legislation.
Attorney for the December 12th Movement, Roger Wareham, says they can get this legislation through following the outrage from the murder of George Floyd.
“Black people have demanded reparations since the end of the Civil War,” Wareham says. “And the struggle and the demand has had its ebbs and flows.”
The bill has already gotten through the assembly.
Advocates are calling on Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins to hold a special session.
