Mitsubishi is recalling over 76,000 of its Outlander Sport SUVs, because of a software error that might cause the engine to rev too high at speeds above 62 mph and permanently damage the engine.
Yonkers-based Consumer Reports says the problem may cause the car to stall while in motion, which could cause a crash. The issue is in vehicles manufactured between July 31, 2018, and May 11, 2022.
Outlander Sports with a manual transmission and/or a push-button start are not included in the recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the problem has caused at least 31 instances of engines that needed to be replaced due to this issue, but that there have been no crashes or injuries related to the recall.
Mitsubishi dealerships will provide a software update to affected vehicles, free of charge.
