Recreation and senior center across the boroughs began reopening today.

The Parks Department opened 13 recreation centers to members with new health and safety guidelines.

Social distancing and masks are mandatory. The centers will also be operating at a reduced capacity.

There will be cleaning across the facilities, including the equipment used by everyone.

Seniors will also be allowed to get together again at senior centers

Mayor Bill de Blasio says the openings are possible because of homebound vaccination efforts, and low COVID-19 positivity rates

He says it’s important for seniors to have interaction.

“So senior centers are coming back—they mean so much to so many members of our families,” de Blasio says. “A positive place, a nurturing place, a place where people get fellowship and great food and activities and health care support, physical and mental health care support.”

The mayor and health officials say they are excited about reopening, but urge everyone to get vaccinated and continue following safety guidelines.

Deputy Director of Press and Public Information for the Department for the Aging Alice Du told News 12 in a statement: “While some centers will reopen on the 14th, others continue the preparations needed to welcome back older New Yorkers. Older adults are advised to reach out to their local senior center for more information.”
