The American Red Cross has declared an emergency during National Blood Donor Month due to a critical shortage of blood.

The nonprofit says the number of people donating blood is at its lowest level in 20 years. There's been about a 40% drop in the number of people willing to donate blood.

The Red Cross says the blood shortage is bad enough that it could delay medical procedures and put people's lives at risk.
