The subway station at Newkirk and Nostrand avenues in the Little Haiti section of East Flatbush now has a new name.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority renamed the station “Little Haiti Station” in honor of the neighborhood’s Haitian culture.
The area has seen a cultural movement in recent years and had streets renamed after prominent Haitian figures. New signage on the subway now says Newkirk Avenue Little Haiti Station. MTA officials say the audio systems have also been updated.
Elected officials and the community gathered to celebrate by playing music and dancing in the street. The station’s renaming is a part of an initiative by Assembly Member Rodneyse Bichotte-Hermelyn and other elected officials.
