A new report by the city claims that school crime across New York is declining.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly are encouraged by statistics they say show major felony crimes down by more than 34 percent during Bloomberg?s tenure.

The number of violent incidents in city schools has also dipped 10 percent, the mayor said on his weekly radio address Sunday. The mayor says school safety is essential to accomplishing academic success.

?The safer and more orderly a school is, as you know, the more the students learn,? Bloomberg says. ?And that's why school safety really has been a major priority of our administration.?

City officials are giving credit to the combined efforts of the NYPD, school safety agents, teachers and administrators for the decline in violence.
