Next to the iconic Yankee Stadium - home to legends like Babe Ruth and Derek Jeter - sits Macombs Dam Park.
It's a historic community space now under scrutiny.
Runners and athletes say the park’s deteriorating track and field pose serious safety risks.
"The track can definitely use some work," said runner Joe Bull. "There’s usually a lot of potholes and little holes in it, so you can trip up easily. It definitely needs renovations and upkeep."
But it's not just the track raising concerns. On the adjacent turf field, parkgoers say deep divots, many caused by dirt bikes, according to witnesses, have made playing conditions dangerous.
"We don’t want people riding bikes on the track," said trainer Rafael Western. "When you do any activity, [it's] dangerous to have an injury because of the holes - you can twist your ankle, or back step."
Built in 1899, Macombs Dam Park has long served as a multiuse recreational space for the community. But aging infrastructure and years of heavy use have taken their toll. Many now see the park as a safety hazard in urgent need of attention.
"As an athlete, I come here and see these conditions, it's time for somebody to do something and change it," said one concerned park user.
NYC Parks tells News 12 that they acknowledge the issue and, in a statement, said Macombs Dam Park is one of the most heavily used parks in their system. Consistent wear and tear, combined with the field's location above a garage, have posed challenges to the integrity of the playing surface."
NYC Parks adds that it will be making "in-house repairs to the turf" and will look at ways to maintain the field for a better experience for the community as it plans a renovation of the field in the future.
