Police say this is the third child shot this year and residents called on the shooter to turn himself in. Councilman Charles Barron emphasized that the authorities need to work harder to find the shooter.
The NYPD released a photo of the man who they believe to be the shooter. They say he was aiming for another man with a 2-year-old child who he was putting in the back of his car around 6 p.m.
Officials say the suspect missed the man, but one of the approximately five bullets he shot instead hit a 3-year-old girl in the shoulder. The girl had just been picked up from day care and was walking down the sidewalk with her father.
Police say the father and child were not the intended targets.
According to police, the suspect got into a white BMW that another person was driving and fled down Thomas Boyland Street.
The girl remained in the hospital Saturday in stable condition.
Police ask anyone with any information that might help them track down either the alleged shooter or driver to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
