A fire at a condominium complex in Essex County sent one person to the hospital and displaced dozens of residents.

Officials say that the first started just after 11:30 a.m. Monday at Claridge House II in Verona. It is a 12-story condominium complex.

Officials say that there was smoke on the upper floors and that they found flames on the 10th floor in a hallway storage area.

One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Officials also say that 39 first responders were checked out at the scene but did not have to go to the hospital.

Floors seven through 12 were evacuated due to the fire and some carbon monoxide.

Officials say that 23 of the building’s 600 residents were taken to the Verona Community Center for shelter. They said that this included “bed-bound and non-ambulatory persons.”

“Community services, emergency management, and medical staff were present to assist residents,” officials wrote in a statement.

Officials say that there is a mandatory evacuation of the west side of the building due to the damage.

“Fire, EMS, police, and Claridge House II personnel are actively assisting residents with evacuation, transportation, and hotel arrangements,” officials wrote.

Fire departments from all around the area came to assist with the fire.
