A landmark church in Tremont honored its longtime pastor for his service to the community for almost 50 years.
Pastor Sylvanus Jarrett has led the church since 1976 and the Tremont Baptist Church has been a staple for 137 years.
The reverend emigrated to the United States from Jamaica and led the church through many tough times, from 9/11 to the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the church's proudest accomplishments is when it became recognized as an official state landmark in 2000.
On Sunday, the outgoing pastor received a letter from Mayor Bill de Blasio and a proclamation from former Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. for his work.
