A brushfire popped up across the river in Inwood Friday morning.

It comes after one on Wednesday.

News 12 has been told officials launched two engines to stretch a line in the park to put the fire out.

According to the FDNY, at least 67 brushfires have broken out in the Bronx over the last two weeks as of Wednesday.

Parkgoer Cheramie Mondesire tells News 12 she was in the park when the flames first ignited.

As I'm exiting, I start seeing a huge plume of smoke. It spreads quickly, so if you smell smoke, you need to get out of the woods," said Mondesire.

The FDNY tells News 12 it has specialized units to battle these types of fires. It has eight brush fire units citywide that are trained and equipped to fight fires that are removed from roadways or sources of water.

Another parkgoer, Tara Kapoor, says the community needs to do their part in helping to eliminate those risks.

"I think there needs to be more awareness about smoking. Just yesterday, I saw a guy smoking a cigarette just walking around. One spark, that’s all it takes," said Kapoor.

The city is urging residents to not light any outdoor fires.

A Red Flag Warning was issued Friday for critical fire weather conditions in New York City for 7 a.m. Saturday through 6 p.m. Saturday due to the low humidity, gusts around 25 to 30 mph, and already concerningly dry conditions.

News 12 Reporter Brittany Cadet Friday afternoon report on the second Inwood brushfire.
