Parents and officials in Riverdale say a particular block along West 235th Street has a rat problem that is getting out of control.
Parents say up to seven rats at a time come out of holes in the ground and endanger families.
They say the vermin have also been scurrying out of burrows near a manhole cover since the summer.
With multiple schools, a library and a soccer field nearby, parents say they reached out to local leaders to get involved. Politicians say they've contacted multiple city departments, but that the blame keeps getting passed.
State Sen. Jeffrey Klein says he was contacted by several upset parents over the summer, leading him to reach out to several city agencies, but he hasn’t been able to determine who is in charge of the land.
Klein says the city sent an exterminator to the location, but it did not solve the issue.
The Department of Parks told News 12 that the area is not under its jurisdiction.
News 12 reached out to the Departments of Health and Environmental Protection, but have not yet received a response.
