The city is in shock after a 4.8 magnitude earthquake felt in the tri-state area and beyond.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake happened at 10:23 a.m. in New Jersey. Manhattan may be more than an hour away by car, but the rumbling was still felt by many in the city.

“The whole apartment began rattling, and I thought there was a very, very large truck outside idling that was causing the whole building to shake,” Upper West Side resident John Fugelsang told News 12 New York.

Kajal Dave felt the earthquake in her apartment nearby. “I felt my bed shaking so I just woke up, I looked toward the window and my windows were shaking, there were loud noises everywhere,” she recalled.

Rudy Gutierrez was also inside when he felt it. “Everyone’s reaction all at once told us it was more than just construction,” he said.

“I'm absolutely shocked, I was ready to look online and see that it was a 3 point something, but to find out that it was 4.8 really blew my mind,” Harlem’s Zachary Booth said.
